Usability and Accessibility

User experience is the collective outcome of design, content, navigation, functionality, and ability to satisfy user expectations as users browse a website.

Main Principles

Here are some high-level principles to keep in mind as you create a website:

  • Content must be written for the diverse, international IEEE community. This includes clear writing, accessibility, internationalized information, and sites that are responsive to different devices (and bandwidth).
  • Provide accurate, useful, easy to find information. This includes all of the quality considerations for accurate, consistent experience and editing, and navigation/linking.
  • Reflects IEEE's reputation as a leader in the professional association space and helps further its mission of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Includes branding and design, legal considerations, and a robustly maintained family of sites.

Usability

Usability is the extent to which a product can be used by intended users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. User-centric pages contain:

  • Key information related to the topic within the page/section
  • The means for users to accomplish their tasks quickly and efficiently
  • Content that is presented in a user-centric, not an organization-centric, way
  • Information that is structured in a logical and straightforward manner
  • Promotions, if applicable, that are presented only after users have completed their tasks

Accessibility

Digital accessibility is the ease with which people with disabilities (physical, cognitive, or technological) can understand, navigate, interact with, and contribute to the digital.

All IEEE sites must, at a minimum, comply with Section 508 (29 U.S.C. ‘ 794d) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level A. If complete compliance has not yet been reached, you must have a project plan to obtain completion and be actively working to complete it within a reasonable amount of time.

IEEE digital publishers are encouraged to deliver content at higher accessibility levels (Level AA or Level AAA) whenever possible.
